Thursday PAUSE: Our Virginia Flag with Sushmita Mazumdar
This Women’s History Month let’s take a look at the flag of the Virginia—one of six U.S. state flags with a depiction of a woman, and the only state flag in the U.S. depicting nudity. Put that next to electing our first woman governor!
Join Sushmita Mazumdar to learn more, discuss with others, and make your own expressions of the VA flag using various materials.
Registration required!
Thursday PAUSE: Expressive US Flags with Sushmita Mazumdar
As we prepare for our VA250 exhibit many ideas shared have to do with the US flag. As we talk and discuss, I learn many stories of the flag, including how a Supreme Court ruling allows for the US flag to be used in so many ways. Join us to learn more and make your own expressions of the flag using various materials. ~ Sushmita Mazumdar

Thursday PAUSE: Bengali Song & Chinese Ink with Sushmita Mazumdar
When Sushmita lived in India, her family celebrated during the January festival of Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of arts and knowledge, and as an artist today, her art reflects many of her traditions from India and mixes them with her experience in the US. While creating a collaborative book project, Wandering Leaves Emerging Roots, inspired by the Bengali songs of Rabindranath Tagore, Sushmita re-learned how to write her native Bengali script in new ways.
In this Thursday PAUSE, listen to the Bengali songs, read the English translations, see Sushmita’s art, and use Chinese ink to make your own expressive art.
Let’s Tell Our Tales: Personal Storybooks with Sushmita Mazumdar

Each book, inspired by one of Sushmita’s, presents an opportunity to work with different techniques and media, from paper-cutting and 3-D structures to color pencils on pastel paper, Chinese ink and brush, and collage.
