Thursday PAUSE: Bengali Song & Chinese Ink with Sushmita Mazumdar

  • Studio PAUSE 4710 Columbia Pike Arlington, VA 22206 USA (map)

When Sushmita lived in India, during the January festival of Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of arts and knowledge, her family celebrated with placing all their books, pens, art materials, and musical instruments at the altar of the goddess, so she could bless the tools and the work. As an artist today, her art reflects many of her traditions from India and mixes them with her experience in the US.

For a collaborative project titled Wandering Leaves Emerging Roots inspired by Bengali songs by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, Sushmita re-learned how to write her native Bengali script. But after her 20-year study of Asian art since moving to the US, it had Chinese and Japanese influences! Listen to the Bengali song, read the English translation, see Sushmita’s art, and use Chinese ink to make your own expressive art.
